We did our first camping trip in a camper instead of a tent at Kings Mountain Campground, and I must say it was pretty fabulous and much easier to set up! Coming into a cool place after adventuring all day was a huge perk to having a camper.
We decided to go to Kings Mountain state park for our first camper run.
Kings Mountain Campground really is a special park full of all sorts of low-key but amazing special touches.
The Living Historic Farm at Kings Mountain Campground
The first day, we walked around the “Living Historic Farm.” We enjoyed seeing the donkey and horses while there.
Then we walked the short but hilly 1.8-mile historic trail where the battle of Kings Mountain took place.
We spent the afternoon playing at the playground, around Lake Crawford, and in the creek by the Lake Crawford spillway.
We always like to put the hammock up on the “island” that is surrounded by the creek.
While we were there, Hilt decided to climb and sit on a large rock. At that moment Chad warned, “watch out for snakes.” The moment Chad said this, Hilt stealthily jumped up and surprisingly calmly said, “oh my gosh, there was a snake.” A nice size snake decided to slither right beside Hilt’s bottom at that very moment.
Five minutes later, Chad sees another snake in the water.
Paddleboarding in Lake York at the Kings Mountain Campground
The next day, we went paddle boarding at kings mountain’s second and bigger lake, Lake York.
This was scribble’s first paddle boarding experience.
She only fell in once but the handle on the life vest made it super easy to lift her back into the paddle board.
Camp York
We paddled to Camp York, which is a camp that doesn’t appear to be in operation anymore.
Camp York was pretty fascinating to explore for a bit. We ate a snack lunch at a picnic table by the Camp York dock.
Some of the cabin doors were open, and we were able the peer inside.
We were pretty sure we heard an animal scurrying around in one of the cabins.
The Games Court
Later in the evening, we played at the games area.
They had corn hole, ladder ball, bocce ball, horseshoes, and a basketball goal. We signed out the bocce balls and ladder balls at the trading post and played several games.
The Trading Post at the Kings Mountain Campground
We visited the trading post quite often; first, to check in, second to sign out the bocce and ladder balls, third to buy a Christmas ornament and firewood, and finally to get a little first aid help for Neeshie’s bee sting. The ladies working were so kind and gave us some cream to put on it.
On the second day, we ran into one of Chad’s friends from work. We invited his family to hang out at our camper. Hilt and his son hit it off. Like Hilt , his son plays club soccer. His son played club soccer for Clover Elite, and Hilt plays for Charlotte Independence. They played soccer tennis for a good while.
Enjoying our Campsite
We weren’t always on the go. We also spent plenty of time relaxing by the fire. We ate s’mores, read from a joke book, and played “would you rather.” We enjoyed eating delicious food at the campsite.
We often played board games or soccer tennis after dinner or just chilled in the hammock.
Kings Mountain Campground Review
In short, we loved it! One night while Neeshie was climbing into her bunk, Neeshie giggled and said, “This is awesome!” Hilt asked, “What is?” Neeshie replied, “Camping.” We all 💯 agreed.
